Slow proton production in semi-inclusive DIS off nuclei: the role of final state interaction

    Get PDF
The effects of the final state interaction on the production of slow protons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic lepton scattering off nuclei is considered within the spectator mechanism and a realistic approach in which the rescattering in the medium of both the recoiling proton and the hadronizing nucleon debris are taken into account.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in the Proceedings of the "Fifth International Conference on Perspectives in Hadronic Physics" held at ICTP, Trieste, 22 - 26 May 200

Hadronization and final state interaction effects in semi-exclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering off nuclei

Recent calculations of the effects of hadronization and final state interaction (FSI) in semi-exclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) A(e,e(A1))XA(e,e'(A-1))X processes are reviewed. The basic ingredient underlying these calculations, {\it viz} the time-dependent effective debris-nucleon cross section is illustrated, and some relevant results on complex nuclei and the deuteron are presented. In the latter case, particular attention is paid to the choice of the kinematics, for such a choice would in principle allow one to investigate both the structure function of a bound nucleon as well as the hadronization mechanisms. It is stressed that a planned experiment at Jlab on the process D(e,ep)XD(e,e'p)X could be very useful in that respect.Comment: 6 pages, 5 EPS figures. Presented by C. Final state interaction effects in semi-inclusive DIS off the deuteron

The effects of the final state interaction (FSI) in semi-exclusive deep-inelastic scattering of electrons off the deuteron are analyzed paying particular attention to two extreme kinematical regions: i) the one where FSI effects are minimized, so that the quark distribution of bound nucleons could be investigated, and ii) the one where the re-interaction of the produced hadrons with the spectator nucleon is maximized, which would allow one to study the mechanism of hadronization of highly virtual quark. It is demonstrated that when the recoiling spectator nucleon is detected in the backward hemisphere with low momentum the effects from FSI are negligible, whereas at large transverse momenta of the spectator the FSI effects are rather large. Numerical estimates show that the FSI corrections are sensitive to the theoretical models of the hadronization mechanism.Comment: 18 pages 6 figures A draft of the paper was erroneously sent instead of the paper itsel

Lepton Scattering off Few-Nucleon Systems at Medium and High Energies

The interpretation of recent Jlab experimental data on the exclusive process A(e,e'p)B off few-nucleon systems are analyzed in terms of realistic nuclear wave functions and Glauber multiple scattering theory, both in its original form and within a generalized eikonal approximation. The relevance of the exclusive process 4He(e,e'p)^3H for possible investigations of QCD effects is illustrated.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Plenary talk given by C. On the Extraction of the Neutron Spin Structure Functions and the Gerasimov -- Drell -- Hearn Integral from 3He(e,e)X^3\vec {He}(\vec e, e')X data

Nuclear effects in polarized inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He^3He are discussed; in the kinematics of future experiments at CEBAF, Fermi motion effects are found to be much larger than in deep inelastic scattering. It is shown that improperly describing nuclear dynamics would lead to the extraction of unreliable neutron spin structure functions. On the other hand side, a simple and workable equation relating the Gerasimov -- Drell -- Hearn Integral for the neutron to the corresponding quantity for 3He^3He is proposed.Comment: 13 pages Latex including 3 postscript figure

Nucleon-Nucleon Correlations and Six-Quark Cluster Effects in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Lepton Scattering off Few-Nucleon Systems

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering off few-nucleon systems is investigated assuming that virtual boson absorption occurs on a hadronic cluster which can be either a two-nucleon correlated pair or a six-quark bag. In both cases the relevance of nuclear effects on forward and backward nucleon emissions is illustrated and the differences expected in the energy distribution of the emitted nucleons are analyzed both at x>1 and x<1.Comment: 17 pages, preprint INFN-ISS 94/8, September 1994. Investigation of the Neutron Form Factors by Inclusive Quasi-Elastic Scattering of Polarized Electrons off Polarized 3^{3}He: A Theoretical Overview

The theory of quasi-elastic inclusive scattering of polarized leptons off polarized 3^3He is critically reviewed and the origin of different expressions for the polarized nuclear response function appearing in the literature is explained. The sensitivity of the longitudinal asymmetry upon the neutron form factors is thoroughly investigated and the role played by the polarization angle for minimizing the proton contribution is illustrated.Comment: Phys.
